  4. A massive temblor shudders Manila and its environs, killing more
  5. than 700 people

  8.     According to Filipino myth, the earthquakes that regularly
  9. ravage the archipelago are caused by the exertions of a
  10. legendary Tagalog king as he tries to free himself from his
  11. prison cave. Last week the king bestirred himself anew. At 4:26
  12. p.m. Monday, a massive temblor shook the northern island of
  13. Luzon. At its epicenter in Nueva Ecija province, north of
  14. Manila, it measured 8.0 on the Richter scale (last month's
  15. quake in northwestern Iran registered 7.7). One of the worst-hit
  16. cities was the mountain resort of Baguio, 150 miles north of
  17. Manila, where dozens of buildings collapsed. By week's end the
  18. quake had killed more than 700 people and injured nearly 3,000.
  19. Hundreds were missing, most trapped in the rubble of shattered
  20. buildings.

  22.     In the provincial capital of Cabanatuan, rescue workers used
  23. handkerchiefs to ward off the stench of decaying bodies as they
  24. worked in the sweltering heat to peel away the remains of a
  25. six-story school building. "It happened so fast," said Abelaida
  26. Belino, a school principal who was in her office when the quake
  27. hit. "I had to stumble my way out. But I'm very lucky. I feel
  28. like I've been given a new life."

  30.     Metropolitan Manila, though largely undamaged, was severely
  31. shaken. In Malacanang Palace, where President Corazon Aquino
  32. was presiding over a meeting with Cabinet ministers and
  33. Senators, participants scrambled for cover under the conference
  34. table. Quipped Aquino: "What the coup failed to do, the
  35. earthquake did" -- a reference to the stoutly denied report
  36. that during a failed 1987 insurrection she was cowering under
  37. her bed.
